2010 Series Results

A HUGE thanks to everyone who supported the series this year, especially the carlisle family ymca and tailwinds in Harleysville. Thanks to everyone who donated to help get me to CA to learn more about the NorCal league and NICA. At this point in time, I do not plan to continue the series next year. Maybe I'll start this up again down the road, but PA isn't ready for this yet. Furthermore, the PA state HS/MS champs will be postponed indefinitely. Thanks.

Registration

Registration opens at 8am, and will close at 9:30am. Please be on time to sign your waiver and pick up your race number. Remember that an adult must be present to sign for all Minors.

Pre-registration at bikereg.com is the prefered method of registration.

Day of registration is available on site, but there will be a $5 late fee.

Awards

The awards ceremony will happen at 12pm after each race. Following the event awards at the last race, we will have series awards with a lot of fun prizes for participating in the series all season.

For Team Leaders

The role of the coach is very important and crucial to the success of the series. Many people are interested in helping out juniors to get started in mountain biking and you will be looked up to as a place to find that help.

It is important to understand a few principles about coaching your High School Club:
1) You are a motivator and a professional helping children
2) Every move you make impacts what happens in your club
3) You are not always the best source for information
4) Don't be afraid to ask for help, even if you are the head coach on a large high school team
5) A race is JUST A RACE

We break down club staff into three categories. Each team is suggested to have one head coach and at least 1 other assistant coach. There should always be two adults with a group of children. Never put yourself in a position where you are alone with the team.

Head Coach
The job of the head coach is to run and over see the functionality of the team as a whole unit. The head coach should learn to delegate assignments, not just to handle them all alone. Team training plans are the responsibility of the Head coach, and he/she should be well experienced in not only their own racing experience but as an effective endurance coach as well.

Assistant Coach
It is the responsibility of the assistant coach to aide the Head coach in any way deemed fit, from carrying out programs and educating student to leading rides and organizing parents.

Ride Leader
A ride leader is an adult who is certified with the league to teach skills and lead rides with the team. There must be a ride leader for the first 3 students and another ride leader for every 6 after that. (So 4 riders should have 2 ride leaders, just as 9 should have 2 ride leaders) It is their responsibility to plan rides, and make sure everyone is safe on those rides.

The PASCL Mountain Bike Racing Series is a youth specific racing series. It is an oppurtunity for boys and girls to try a new, rewarding sport. Cycling pushes personal limits, physically and mentally, a very rewarding sport that shows that the harder you try, the faster you go. We are dedicated to sharing our passion of the sport to the youth of Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic region, through a youth specific mountain bike racing series. We strive to create a fun, positive environment for youth to try mountain biking. You may be a seasoned veteran, or turning the pedals for the first time, this series has something for everyone.
We are designed to initiate school mountain biking clubs and programs by getting the ball rolling. We provide a place for kids from different schools to compete against each other in healthy competition. Through this initiative, maybe someday we will have a state wide program with multiple series', all united by the State High School Championships.

Mountain Biking is a relatively new sport, especially for you and your child. Your child will be very excited about this new found sport, and it may be helpful to know a few things about it.

Mountain biking IS an inherently dangerous sport. You can get hurt participating in it, however we work very hard to minimize the risk potential at our events. It is important to be involved in your childs racing and their team. The more you are involved, the more you will enjoy it as well. Many parents find that going to a bike race is just like tail-gating at a football game.

Mountain biking is also a healthy, active lifestyle sport that your child will be able to participate in well after high school and college. It is a bonding sport with a rich and deep community that is truly enriching for anybody.

Dates are not permanently set yet. There will be two series going on: one in eastern PA and on in Central PA at the same time under the same structure. Race at your closest series, or the one your team is registered in. Races happen on the same dates. (that means there are two races going on at the same time in two different parts of the state)

It's really convenient, all races are held at the lovely New Frontiers Day Camp located just north of Carlisle, PA. New Frontiers is a day camp property of the Carlisle Family YMCA. Overflowing with tight and twisty hidden single track, New Frontiers is a great place to learn to mountain bike or to kick around in a competitive race.

Series prizes will be awarded at the end of the last race for each conference. Ribbons will be awarded for each individual race.

This is a series, and in such, that means that riders accumulate points for each of their performances that tally up to comprise their season points total. The rider with the highest score in each category at the end of the three races wins their given category.

There is also a Team Cup to be won.
-To be eligible, teams must be registered with the series.
-The top 3 male racers and the top 3 female racers from each team will be counted towards team points in each race.
-A trophy and Conference Champion Title will be awarded to the winning team.

What is a conference and what is the difference? Which conference am I? How do I become part of the conference?? I'm still confused.....

Well, the Pennsylvania Scholastic Cycling League is currently split up into 2 conferences:

The Eastern Conference
and
The Central Conference

Your team should be registered in one or the other (but not both) conferences. You should race at your teams conference races to help score points for the series championships. If you are an unattached rider, you should pick your closest conference and race those events!

How to Start a High School Cycling Club

Detailed instructions on how to start a club:

First of all, there are a few types of clubs we recognize here at the PASCL:
1) High School Recognized Clubs (Made up of 1 school district)
2) Conglomerate Teams (made up of multiple school districts)
3) Unattached Riders (No Team)

7 Easy Steps in starting your own Team:
1) Spark interest!
2) Find a club Moderator
3) Fund raise!
4) Register with USA Cycling as a High School Club
5) Register with the series as your designated team type
6) Hold practices
7) Race!

1) Spark interest!
Finding interested juniors is not only the job of involved adults, but is the job of young cyclists as well. There is not better spokesman than a young person thrilled to be a part of mountain biking and the league. Get out there and talk to your friends and other kids, telling them about mountain biking, the league, and how easy it is to get involved.

2) Find a club Moderator or Head Coach
There are a bunch of people out there who are interested in getting involved with a youth racing league. They don't have to be avid cyclists either! If you want to start a school team, and have a teacher who is willing to get involved, that is all you need to start!

3) Fund raise!
Form a booster club or check out one of the many fund raising companies on the internet for ideas. You can also talk to local businesses about getting their logo on your jerseys for a small contribution to the team. Or you can create team dues.

4) Register with USA Cycling as a High School Club
Follow this link, complete the form, and send it in with enclosed payment. It's as simple as that! The form is located HERE. Also complete and send in THIS form with your application.

5) Register with the series as your designated team type
This is also very simple to do. Go to www.Bikereg.com and find the PASCL series in the Mid-Atlantic Off Road Section (DIRECT LINK). Select which type of Team you are, and register! Make sure to use the contact information for your team contact.

6) Hold practices
Get two adults to hold a practice once or twice a week: One to lead and one to follow the group. You can hold practices somewhere as simple as your school cross country course, or even go to the closest trail network.

What is the PASCL?

PASCL, the Pennsylvania Scholastic Cycling League, is a mountain bike series for school students(public, private, and home), grades 5-12. We provide multiple categories so that everyone has an appropriate place to race.

Our races are fun and short, allowing established racers a fast and competitive race in the Varsity or Open category and allows students new to mountain bike racing a brief, safe, and fun atmosphere to start their mountain bike racing career or even just try it out in the Junior Varsity or Junior High races.

Are we a series?

Yes we are. We do series awards on the last race of the year, before we go to State Championships. You don not need to do anything additional to be eligable for the series. Points are awarded for each finish in each race and tallied up at the end of the series to award the winners in each category. All four races count, so don't miss any of them!

What do we need to be able to race?

- a working bike(we also have about 17 loaner bikes available upon request and availability)
-an approved helmet
-a waiver signed by your parents/legal gaurdians(available on race day)

What am I waiting for?

Nothing! Come on out and race. You can pre-register at bikereg.com(preferred) or register on the day of the event.

How do I get one of these series started?????

Funny you should ask. Just email me and we will discuss the structure of the events, where you will run these events, and series requirements.

We need people to step up and organize/take the lead on neighboring series' in other parts of Pennsylvania. All I need is a contact and a capable person who will take charge of running the events to our standards, we can work together on any other details/the technical side of the events.

Y-Riders Race Series

The Y-Riders Mountain bike race series will be back for the 3rd year in a row. For 2008 this series will be made up of four cross country mountain bike races.

Race #1- Michaux in March XC
Sunday March 16, 2008
Race number one will be held in Michaux State Forest on a 3.5 mile loop. Terrain includes multiple small climbs. Moderate rock terrain and smooth wooded trail. Course has a rough break down of 80% single track, 15% double track, and 5% dirt road. Venue is the parking lot 30 feet to the south of Woodrow road off of Route 233 in michaux state forest.

NOTE****- No bathrooms on site. Regular bathrooms are located in Pine Grove state park, less than 2 miles from the venue(on the drive in). Please plan accordingly.

Race #2- New Frontiers in April
Saturday April 19, 2008
Will be held at the Carlisle Family YMCA's New Frontiers Day Camp property, located 7 minutes north of Carlisle, PA. A staple site of the Y-Riders series, has hosted many of the past y-riders races. A nice combination of single track, double track, and field connectors. No rocks, yet still challenging with logs and other technically challenging trails. Good for beginners too.

You know it, you love it, it's the Osterling Farm. Hasn't seen this schedule since 2005. 95% lucious, gorgeous, and curvatious single track that defines the property, you will love it.All starts will be at 9am to accomodate mothers day plans. Come out and race early then go spend a great day with your mothers. Mothers will have $10 off their entry fee. There's no bathroom here either.

Race #4- Final Frontier
Saturday June 21, 2008
Same location as race #2. Final race in the series. We will be having tons of spectacular series activites, including: a slow race, garage sale, volleyball game, a skills course, and a barbeque style cook out. Racers are encouraged to bring a sidedish or dessert. Series Champs will be crowned!!!! Check out the series standings to see if you are in contention to win! If you haven't raced this series yet, Come on out and give the last Y-Riders Mountain Bike Race a shot!
On site camping available for friday(after 7pm) and saturday nights. The barbeque lunch is an rsvp event only, it is free for racers but will be $5 for non racers.
